Our Founder
(Miss Mattie)
Before Mathina was an educator, she was a mother searching for a better way — and that search became the foundation of Vibrant Minds. With children ages 24, 6, and 4, along with grandchildren, a large extended family, and former foster children, she has always been surrounded by kids and deeply invested in their growth and well-being.
Mathina dreamed of creating a school where children who don’t fit the traditional mold — curious learners, creative thinkers, neurodivergent students, late bloomers, deep feelers, and kids who simply need a gentler approach — could finally thrive.
A place where learning feels joyful and meaningful — not rushed, rigid, or overwhelming.
Today, Mathina brings that vision to life every day through mastery-based teaching, individualized pacing, and a whole-child philosophy rooted in compassion, relationships, and real-world learning.
Her experience as a mother, educator, advocate, and caregiver shapes everything about Vibrant Minds. The school is not just her work — it is her heart.
Mathina Starks
Years later, working with children through childcare and foster care, and raising my own children, I began to see the same thing over and over again — many incredibly smart, creative, and capable kids were struggling in school, not because they couldn’t learn, but because the environment wasn’t built for how they learned or who they were.
Originally, I went back to school to help my own children. But along the way, I realized there were many families looking for something different — a smaller school, individualized learning, more hands-on experiences, less pressure, and a place where their children could feel confident and successful.
Vibrant Minds was created to be that place.
Our Why
A Personal Note from Miss Mattie
Vibrant Minds did not start as a business idea. It started from a lifetime of working with children, raising my own children, foster parenting, and remembering what it felt like to be a child who didn’t quite fit into the traditional school mold.
As a child, I did well in school academically. I got good grades and loved reading and learning, but I never really felt like I fit in. I often preferred being around adults or younger kids, and school could feel overwhelming socially. I spent many recesses in the library or staying inside the classroom rather than outside with everyone else. I also moved a lot growing up, and every school was different, which made it even harder to find a place where I felt like I belonged.
My journey into education became very personal when my own children had different learning needs. My oldest daughter struggled in school and eventually I made the decision to homeschool her so she could learn in a way that worked for her. Later, when my son was diagnosed with degenerative vision loss and was not receiving the support he needed, I went back to school myself to learn how to better advocate for him and support his education. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Education and am now completing my Master’s degree focused on teaching students with visual impairments.art, creative, and capable kids were struggling in school, not because they couldn’t learn, but because the environment wasn’t built for how they learned or who they were.
Our Beginning
Our VIBES values guide everything we do:
-
Venture Forth – Be brave enough to try, make mistakes, and start again.
-
Inquire Deeply – Ask questions, explore ideas, and look beneath the surface.
-
Believe in Yourself – Build confidence through small wins, persistence, and support.
-
Envision Greatness – Imagine your future, set goals, and take steps toward them.
-
Shine Your Light – Use your unique strengths and gifts to help your community.
At Vibrant Minds, we imagine a learning space where every child feels seen, safe, and capable. Students move at a pace that fits them, explore their interests in meaningful ways, and grow in confidence as they master skills—not just move through grades.
Vibrant Minds opened in August 2025 with one kindergarten student and one teacher. In November 2025, we welcomed our first middle school student, and our small learning community began to grow.
In December 2025, Vibrant Minds became accredited through Meridian Learning, an important milestone in establishing our school and ensuring academic quality and accountability.
Since opening, we have hosted community events, homeschool collaboration days, field trips, and learning experiences that connect students to the world around them. As our school continues to grow, we look forward to welcoming more students and families into our learning community while keeping the small, supportive environment that makes Vibrant Minds special.
To maintain individualized learning and strong relationships, Vibrant Minds is intentionally designed as a small school with a low student-to-teacher ratio. Our goal is to maintain approximately a 1:9 teacher-to-student ratio so every student receives the attention, support, and individualized instruction they need to succeed.
Our Vision
Our Future
Our vision for the future of Vibrant Minds is to remain small and personal while continuing to grow into a strong learning community. We hope to expand to two teachers and approximately 18 students so we can maintain small group learning, individualized instruction, and a close-knit school environment.
We also hope to continue building strong relationships and collaboration with local homeschool families to expand social opportunities, group learning experiences, field trips, and community partnerships for all students. We believe education works best when communities work together, not separately.
Future goals for Vibrant Minds include:
-
Expanding our student community
-
Adding another teacher
-
Offering more field trips and community partnerships
-
Building strong collaboration opportunities with homeschool families
-
Purchasing a small school bus for transportation and trips
-
Continuing to build a school where every child feels known, supported, and valued
Vibrant Minds will never be a large school — our goal is to stay small enough that every student is truly known.
